14 Books Coming to Film in 2018

If you love watching movies based on books, then you’re in luck! There are plenty of movies coming in 2018 that are based on books, and with this list you’ll have plenty to choose from, or you could read all of them.

1. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade’s devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world’s digital confines, puzzles that are based on their creator’s obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. When Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade’s going to survive, he’ll have to win, and confront the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape. The film adaptation is scheduled in theaters for March.

 

2. Fifty Shades: Freed by EL James

Ana and Christian now have it all: love, passion, intimacy, wealth, and a world of possibilities for their future. But Ana knows that loving her Fifty Shades will not be easy, and that being together will pose challenges that neither of them would anticipate. Ana must somehow learn to share Christian’s opulent lifestyle without sacrificing her own identity, and Christian must overcome his compulsion to control as he wrestles with the demons of a tormented past. Just when it seems that their strength together will eclipse any obstacle, misfortune, malice, and fate conspire to make Ana’s deepest fears turn to reality. The final installment of the trilogy is set to hit theaters in February.

 

3. Maze Runner: The Death Cure by James Dashner

WICKED has taken everything from Thomas: his life, his memories, and now his only friends. But the trials are finally complete, after one final test. What WICKED doesn’t know is that Thomas remembers more than they think. And it’s enough to prove that he can’t believe a word of what they say. Thomas beat the Maze. He survived the Scorch. He’ll risk anything to save his friends. But the truth might be what ends it all. This third installment of the series is set to be released in January.

 

4. MEG by Steve Alten

On a top-secret dive into the Pacific Ocean’s deepest canyon, Jonas Taylor found himself face-to-face with the largest and most ferocious predator in the history of the animal kingdom. The sole survivor of the mission, Taylor is haunted by what he’s sure he saw but still can’t prove exists: Carcharodon megalodon, the massive mother of the great white shark. Taylor spends years theorizing, lecturing, and writing about the possibility that Meg still feeds at the deepest levels of the sea.

But it takes an old friend in need to get him to return to the water, and a hotshot female submarine pilot to dare him back into a high-tech miniature sub. Diving deeper than he ever has before, Taylor will face terror like he’s never imagined. MEG is about to surface, and when she does, nothing and no one is going to be safe, and Jonas must face his greatest fear once again. MEG is expected to be in theaters in March, and star Jason Statham and Ruby Rose.

 

5. Hunting Christ by Ken Policard

Also set to come to theaters in March is story about a bet between God and Lucifer. Lucifer bets God that Christ would be unable to achieve divinity in modern times. God accepts the bet.

 

6. All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

Theodore Finch is fascinated by death, and constantly thinks of ways he might kill himself. Each time, however, something good stops him. Violet Markey lives for the future, counting the days until graduation, when she can escape her Indiana town and her aching grief in the wake of her sister’s recent death.

When Finch and Violet meet on the ledge of the bell tower at school, it’s unclear who saves whom. They pair up on a project to discover the “natural wonders” of their state, and both make more important discoveries: It’s only with Violet that Finch can be himself: a weird, funny, live-out-loud guy who’s not such a freak after all. And it’s only with Finch that Violet can forget to count away the days and start living them. But as Violet’s world grows, Finch’s begins to shrink. The film will star Elle Fanning.

 

7. I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt

The first words Jimmy Hoffa ever spoke to Frank “the Irishman” Sheeran were, “I heard you paint houses.” To paint a house is to kill a man. In the course of nearly five years of recorded interviews, Frank Sheeran confessed to Charles Brandt that he handled more than twenty-five hits for the mob, and for his friend Hoffa. After returning home from World War II, he became a hustler and hit man, working for legendary crime boss Russell Bufalino.

When Bufalino ordered Sheeran to kill Hoffa, he did the deed, knowing that if he had refused he would have been killed himself. Sheeran’s important and fascinating story includes new information on other famous murders, and provides rare insight to a chapter in American history. The film is set to star Al Pancino and Robert DeNiro.

 

8. Chaos Walking by Patrick Ness

Prentisstown isn’t like other towns. Everyone can hear everyone else’s thoughts in an overwhelming, never-ending stream of Noise. Just a month away from the birthday that will make him a man, Todd and his dog, Manchee, whose thoughts Todd can hear too, stumble upon an area of complete silence. They find that in a town where privacy is impossible, something terrible has been hidden, a secret so awful that Todd and Manchee must run for their lives. But how do you escape when your pursuers can hear your every thought? Daisy Ridley will star in the film adaptation.

 

9. Ophelia by Lisa Klein

In this reimagining of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, it is Ophelia who takes center stage. But bloody deeds soon turn Denmark into a place of madness, and Ophelia’s happiness is shattered. Ultimately, she must choose between her love for Hamlet and her own life. In desperation, Ophelia devises a treacherous plan to escape from Elsinore forever, with one very dangerous secret.

The film adaptation is set to star Naomi Watts and Daisy Ridley.

 

10. The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells

This masterpiece of science fiction is due in theaters in April and is the fascinating story of Griffin, a scientist who creates a serum to render himself invisible, and his descent into madness that follows. The film will star Johnny Depp.

 

11. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle

It was a dark and stormy night; Meg Murry, her brother Charles Wallace, and her mother had come down to the kitchen for a midnight snack when they were upset by the arrival of a most disturbing stranger. Meg’s father had been experimenting with this fifth dimension of time travel when he mysteriously disappeared. Now the time has come for Meg, her friend Calvin, and Charles Wallace to rescue him. The film will star Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine.

 

12. Witness for the Prosecution by Agatha Christie

When wealthy spinster Emily French is found murdered, suspicion falls on Leonard Vole, the man to whom she hastily bequeathed her riches before she died. Leonard assures the investigators that his wife, Romaine Heilger, can provide them with an alibi. However, when questioned, Romaine informs the police that Vole returned home late that night covered in blood. During the trial, Ms. French’s housekeeper, Janet, gives damning evidence against Vole, and, as Romaine’s cross-examination begins, her motives come under scrutiny from the courtroom.

 

13. Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King

In the early morning hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed and fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes.

In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the “perk” and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy.

Brady Hartfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again. Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of highly unlikely allies, can catch the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady’s next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or injure thousands.

Mr. Mercedes is being turned into a television series, rather than a movie in 2018, and will supposedly star Brendan Gleeson.

 

14. Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet by Joanne Proulx

After freakishly foretelling the death of a friend, Luke Hunter becomes big news in Stokum, his little hometown. Terrified, but pretending not to be, Luke holds everyone at arm’s length as he lurches through a personal minefield studded with previously unconsidered existential ponderings, Christian fundamentalists, a missing teen’s frantic mother, and a dream girl who isn’t his. Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet is currently set to hit theaters in January.
